Cool edible NYC, Queens-style

In the few months that I've been here, I've found so many cool new places to try in the greater NYC area. We all know that NYC has always been cool (loud, dirty, but cool). And in recent years Brooklyn has become super cool. But what about Queens?

I'm a fan of Edible, a publication about local, sustainable food. This week I found out that there's an Edible Queens!
Other cool discoveries:
  • Edible Queens and Edible Queens Blog
  • GrowNYC's list of Greenmarkets
  • NYC Honey Festival on Saturday 9/17
  • Queens Food Swap also on Saturday 9/17
  • Brooklyn Grange Farm (on Wednesdays from 1-6pm you can buy local veggies at this rooftop farm in Long Island City. Navigate to 37-18 Northern Blvd at 38th St in Queens, not Brooklyn. Yes the farm's name is a bit misleading)
  • Serious Eats: Queens
  • Nosh Walks with walking/eating tours in Queens as well as the city and Brooklyn
  • Cannelle Patisserie. My favorite place for a taste of France. Some reviewers claim this is quite possibly the best French bakery and patisserie in all of NYC. I'll need to do some research before making this claim but I do agree they have beautiful looking desserts and the croissants that I have tried are delicious. The chef/owner is from Brittany, or Bretagne and knows how to make a light and flaky croissant, be it a croissant au beurre, pain au chocolat, guava/passionfruit croissant, or almond croissant. His muffins are awesome too. Everything I've tried is light on sweet. No dense, overly sweet stuff here!
Queens Trivia
  • Queens is so named for a princess who became Queen when she married an English king in the 1600s.
  • Queens is home to two airports, Laguardia (domestic) and JFK (international)
  • Lucy Liu, an American-Chinese actress who first became famous for her role as Ling in Ally McBeal and later went on to become a Charlie's Angels was born in Queens. She's now a UN ambassador for UNICEF.
  • Wikipedia article on Queens
Please comment if you think Queens is cool. Or if you have something interesting to share about Queens, or for that matter, Brooklyn, Manhattan, or Long Island.
